Student Guide

Academic plans (undergraduate years)

Locked academic plans

  • Students must create a "locked" academic plan in Degree Works in consultation with their academic advisors (major, minor, pre-med and Honors) by the end of the first semester in the program.
  • An academic plan consists of coursework taken in all semesters to fulfill degree requirements and pre-med requirements. An academic plan can be locked and unlocked to make changes, ONLY by academic advisors. DegreeWorks is the university's degree progress tracking tool available to all students via Academica.
  • Students must follow the locked plan when registering for classes and not following the locked plan can jeopardize their scholarship eligibility as stated in the Wayne Med-Direct contract.
  • Students who may consider changing their academic plan (i.e. changing or adding a class, changing or adding a minor, etc.) should consult an academic advisor to discuss those changes.
  • Any changes to the locked academic plan must be approved and updated in the locked plan by an academic advisor.
  • Any changes must be approved two weeks prior to the first day of priority registration of the applicable semester, if those changes impact that semester's registration. For changes that are impacting other future semesters, a student should work to gain approval, as soon as they become aware of/consider the change.
  • Except in unusual circumstances (as determined by academic advisors) locked academic plans will consist of 4 years of undergraduate education.

Transfer credits

  • Students are welcome to transfer any applicable credits (AP/IB/CLEP/dual enrollment college credits while in high school) taken prior to their first semester at Wayne State University. All transfer credits must be sent to Wayne State University by the end of the fall semester of Year 1 so that they can be taken into account when creating the locked academic plan. Transfer credit information can be found here.
  • Students are expected to complete all coursework at Wayne State University. Any plan to take coursework at another institution and transfer over must be presented to the program for approval as soon as that is a consideration. Any unapproved transfer credits cannot be applied towards degree completion.

Credit limit rules

  • Students must be enrolled as full-time students.
  • Students will not be approved to register for more than 18 credits in any semester in their first year of the WMD program.
  • Students will not register for more than 6 credits OR 2 classes (INCLUDING MLC 1100, WMD Summer Research), whichever of the 2 is greater in the Spring/Summer semesters following their first AND second academic years in the program. A course that has a separate lecture and lab will be considered one course for this purpose.

Course registration timeline

  • Students must register for any semester's courses by the end of the first week of priority registration for that semester. The dates for priority registration can be found on the academic and registration calendar: https://wayne.edu/registrar/registration/calendar

Pre-medicine coursework

Wayne Med-Direct students are required to follow and complete the pre-medicine curriculum during their undergraduate years. WSU SOM requires applicants to complete pre-med coursework in preparation for the high academic caliber of medical school. Also the MCAT covers a broad range of content that are taught in the pre-med curriculum. Pre-medicine curriculum do not constitute a major however students can always plan to take them in correlation with a minor that includes the majority of coursework recommended as the pre-medicine curriculum.
