Episode transcript

Annmarie Caño:
Welcome to EmpowerED to lead. A Wayne State University podcast for academic leaders who are committed to empowering their community to succeed. I'm your host, Annmarie Caño, associate provost for faculty development and faculty success at Wayne State. In this podcast we'll explore the personal journeys of academic leaders, both current and emerging, to learn more about how they've developed their careers. We'll speak with faculty and staff about their work, and how they have empowered themselves and others along the way. By doing this we hope to empower listeners like you, as you continue on your leadership path.

Hello listeners. This is Annmarie Caño, your host of EmpowerED to Lead. A lot of my work over the last year has focused on leadership development for faculty and academic staff. And we're launching a new leadership academy for faculty and staff. What became clear to me is that some of the really great leadership work and insights that people have, are not really accessible to a wider audience. I've been listening to podcasts and I thought "wow, you know, wouldn't it be great if we could do some academic leadership podcast that would be accessible to faculty, academic staff, other staff, even students.

My hope for each episode is that people can see themselves in a variety of leaders, be able to embrace the differences that different leadership styles bring. And then, kind of think about how they want to employ that advice in their own work.

My main goal is to have them feel as comfortable as possible so that they are authentically themselves, because that's when we get the best leadership advice and insights. For people who listen to the entire season, they will see some recurring themes of leadership and what it means to be a great leader at an academic institution. Some of themes that I have pulled include things like the importance of relationship building, being who you are in your leadership role so, if you're an introvert or if you're more outspoken, that all of those are fine. You can be a leader with all of those different kinds of qualities that there is no 'one recipe' for a good leader.

Now that you know more about the podcast we hope you'll tune in every week for a new episode.
