Keep Wayne State Safe from Cyber Attackers

Dear Colleagues,

C&IT is working around the clock to protect the university from cyber scammers, but there is only so much they can do without your help. Wayne State is seeing the highest ever volume of emails looking to take advantage of you and steal your information. Do your part to keep us all safe.

The most common attacks right now are sending weebly.com and tinyurl.com links masquerading as WSU websites. DO NOT CLICK THESE LINKS. You can access Wayne State services by typing the address (such as academica.wayne.edu) directly into the address bar on your Web browser. See examples below of what Wayne State Web addresses should look like so that you know the clues. Keep an eye out for https in the beginning of the address and wayne.edu as the last characters before a forward slash:

Academica in Google Chrome:

Wayne Connect in Safari (Safari truncates some URLs and only shows a name for secure sites, but you can click the address bar to view the full address):

Blackboard in Internet Explorer:

Keep in mind the following facts to protect yourself:

  • Wayne State will never send you an email with an urgent login request. Emails with messages like "your account will be shut down in twelve hours if you don't log in right now" are guaranteed scams.
  • The Wayne Connect upgrade this summer will happen automatically and you do not need to do anything. Following the transfer you will be able to access your email in the same place as before: https://connect.wayne.edu
  • It is a serious risk to use the same password for Wayne State and any other site. If any of them are compromised, all the others will be too.
  • Wayne State, C&IT, and the Help Desk will never ask you to share your password.
  • Delete phishing messages. Do not respond to them. If you are unsure of what to do, contact the C&IT Help Desk.

    Sincerely,

    Margaret E. Winters
Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs
