New Admissions Guidelines

On Feb. 1, 2012, the Board of Governors approved a plan to enhance our students' academic success beginning with their admission to the university. This website explains Wayne State's new admissions guidelines, which will be effective as of the winter 2013 semester, and answers relevant questions:

At Wayne State, not only do we aim higher, but we also make excellence inclusive. Motivated by a desire to remain a university of opportunity while improving the percentage of students that graduate from Wayne State, a committee analyzed our retention and admissions processes including the admissions profiles of successful alumni. We then developed recommendations that included:

  • A holistic evaluation of applicants that examines input beyond the quantitative profile of GPA and ACT scores, including essays, interviews and personal academic history.
  • Summer and fall "bridge" programs to allow students with academic challenges to become better prepared for the rigors of a research university. The bridge curriculum includes classes in math and English as well as success coaching. Students enrolled in the summer bridge program will have tuition, fees, housing and meals covered by scholarships.
  • A prescribed curriculum and enhanced counseling/advising for students facing academic challenges.
  • Increased need- and merit-based financial aid.
  • Continuation and enhancement of successful retention programs, e.g., learning communities.

  • We believe these efforts will ensure that all students admitted to Wayne State have the background and support required for academic success and graduation, and that we will continue as a university of both opportunity and excellence.
