Academic Day

Semifinalists

25 semifinalists are selected and called for an interview at the Wayne Med-Direct Academic Day, which will be held virtually in 2021. 10 finalists are selected from the semifinalist pool at the interviews.

The admission and interview committees include WSU undergraduate faculty and representatives of the Wayne State School of Medicine and the Office of Undergraduate Admissions.

Academic Day agenda

Academic Day is a full-day event running from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on a Saturday. Semifinalists will participate in interviews and have the opportunity to explore the campus in greater depth.

Parents/guests accompanying the candidates will have the opportunity to explore the campus, residence halls and the city of Detroit. Parents/guests will also participate in a panel discussion consisting of current Wayne Med-Direct students and program representatives.

If you are unable to attend Academic Day in person (applicants for fall 2022 and beyond):

Please contact us as soon as the interview offer is received. Alternative interview arrangements (such as an in-person interview on a different day or a Skype/phone interview) will be made with students who cannot be present for the in-person interview due to reasonable scheduling conflicts.

Academic Day travel expenses (for fall 2022 applicants)

For out-of-state students who are flying:

Airfare will be reimbursed for the student and one parent/guest attending the event. Lodging will be provided for the night before the Academic Day at a local hotel. Transportation to/from the airport/hotel/event will be arranged. Additional travel expenses are the student's responsibility.

For out-of-state students who plan to drive:

Mileage will be reimbursed. Lodging will be provided for the night before the Academic Day at a local hotel. Additional travel expenses are the student's responsibility.

For Michigan students who reside > 50 miles radius from Detroit:

Mileage will be not be reimbursed. Lodging can be provided for the night before the Academic Day at a local hotel if necessary. Additional travel expenses are the responsibility of the student.

For Michigan students who reside < 50 miles radius from Detroit:

All travel expenses are the responsibility of the student.

Next steps for finalists

Candidates will be notified of their acceptance to Wayne Med-Direct within a week after Academic Day. Selected finalists will receive a welcome package including the offer letter and the Wayne Med-Direct contract.

Candidates must plan to secure their spot in the incoming Wayne Med-Direct cohort by:

  • notifying us of their acceptance of the offer via email
  • signing and returning the contract
  • paying the enrollment deposit before the date specified in the offer letter

The Wayne Med-Direct program will communicate further with finalists about the pre-freshman summer program, housing arrangements and new student orientation.
